talk about it more

When she was two, Fiona regularly said "Talk about it more!" to express her desire to know more about whatever we were discussing.

Going, going, gone!

Well, today was H-Day. Hair Day, that is! It was Half Price Hair Day, to be exact, at the local beauty college; so we girls were there with bells on today to celebrate Fiona's summer haircut adventure.

We rolled in at 10:30 this morning to meet Torii, our cosmetology student. We showed her pictures of our friend Helena's recently cut hair (see 4/26/07 Why Not? post for background and friend photo), and explained the amount of intensity we wished to focus on Fiona's daily coiffure (translation: how little effort we were willing to make). Then Torii got to work.

Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVED Fiona's little Christopher Robin bob she had "before". It was childlike and simple and cherubic. But watching the transformation this morning was nothing short of enthralling-- even with a simultaneously writhing, kicking, nursing, Cheerio-scattering Nora on my lap. As the chunks of hair tumbled to the floor, somehow Fiona looked MORE like Fiona. Do you suppose it's because of those early years when we waited for hair to grow on her warm, downy, lovable head?

Now she looks mischievous, elfin, precocious. Her style is every bit as feminine as before but without the annoying tresses to go with it-- plus she chose it for herself. Now she can take nature walks in the breeze without hair in her face. She can paint or dance with wild abandon without needing to tuck hair behind her ears, brush it out of her eyes, or try to keep track of some froufrou clip or band.

Joyous Fiona can't stop bouncing today, as if her new hairstyle has made her feel physically lighter. Good for her.

Edit: Sorry, comments were disabled somehow for a while, but comment away now.

You know, we thought the same exact thing--Fiona looks more like Fiona! It's weird, but usually when someone goes through such a big change, it takes a while to get used to, but this just seems so right for her.
